Triangle Tube Boiler Recall Update
We are now in February and have an update on the latest with Triangle Tube. There are a handful of products that are still being recalled due to Carbon Monoxide leak issues. The company asked everyone to register the product by January 31 to be eligible for the recall. We saw one seller give up on the process as it was very cumbersome. And in fact, this seller is just replacing the boiler with a new one for the new buyer.
In speaking with some boiler experts, they stated that they are able to do the recall kit installation, but it is not straight forward. They had done recall kit replacements on about 50 boilers in the last year, which involved replacing a few parts. In many cases the recall kit worked, and in about 30% of the replacements there was more to do as the recall kit created other problems. This led to a lot of back and forth with Triangle Tube to try to get other parts needed. Now that Triangle Tube doesn’t exist, they can’t get new parts if the recall kit doesn’t work perfectly.
If you have a triangle tube boiler, there are parts available for now, and they recommended keeping up maintenance on the existing boilers to keep them in service as long as possible. There is some hope that another company takes over this business and develops replacement parts and future equipment, but currently the industry is in a bit of limbo.
In the event that you need more than the standard recall kit (assuming your product was registered by 1/26), they stated that replacement is the likely next step. The cost ranges for replacement depend on if it can be a “chop and swap” where you just replace the actual boiler or if they need to redo the pipes and zone valves or other components. The range can be anywhere from $10k to $25k.
